Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is an infectious disease, caused by Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome CoronaVirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Even the name is complicated. It is now a Pandemic, an epidemic that’s spread over multiple countries and continents.
WHO may not report every single thing, but what they report is important. Hopefully I can make this less boring because facts can be tedious. Everything we know about the Virus is constantly changing and sincerely, if we pool together every, single, resource on this, it will be as confusing as hell. There are scientific researches done and new scientific researches refute the existing scientific research.
According to World Health Organization, on average it takes 5–6 days from when someone is infected with the virus, after coming in contact with it, for symptoms to show, however it can take up to 14 days. There are people who are asymptomatic and people who are pre-symptomatic. Asymptomatic is sick without showing any symptoms. Pre-symtomatic is sick, but not yet showing symptoms, kind of like the early stages. They’re both carriers and can actively spread the disease. WHO so far has found few truly asymptomatic cases, what we have however are people who are pre-symptomatic, they test positive but only show symptoms much later. Confusing much.
On surfaces, studies suggest that coronaviruses may persist for a few hours or up to several days. This may vary under different conditions (e.g. type of surface like metal, plastic, fabric, temperature and humidity of the environment). But it definitely lasts on surfaces that are not disinfected.
According to WHO, the virus is mainly transmitted through droplets generated when an infected person coughs or sneezes. These droplets are too heavy to hang in the air. They quickly fall on floors or surfaces. There are scientific findings on the internet that claim higher humidity makes it harder for the virus to spread in the air or last longer on surfaces. The weight of another finding suggests that the new coronavirus can exist as an aerosol (a physics term meaning a liquid or solid suspended in a gas, like air) only under very limited conditions, and that this transmission route is not what is driving the pandemic. But “limited” conditions do not mean “no” conditions, which is the underlining need for health care workers to have high levels of personal protection. You can be infected by breathing in the virus if you are within 1 metre of a person who has COVID-19, or by touching a contaminated surface and then touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
According to WHO’s Van Kerkhove, sneezing and coughing are not the only ways droplets get transmitted but also when people clear their throat, or spit when they talk. Angela Rasmussen, a virologist at Columbia’s Mailman School said droplets are not always huge. Humans release respiratory droplets when we speak, when you go outside and you make fog with your breath, when you laugh or shout. They’re bioaerosols, they are much lighter and last in the air much longer. Hello, facemask.
All precautions are not just so you don’t catch it, but also not to spread it if you’re asymptomatic of pre-symptomatic. You’ve heard stay at home. You’ve heard wash your hands. Don’t touch your face, Sneeze into your elbow, stay away from people coughing or sneezing. You’ve heard that the sickness is usually mild and you can actually survive it. Old people may not, young children may not, but the virile will.
But is it this same rice and stew and 1 chicken you’re eating that is making you feel immune? Or the 3 slices of lemon in hot water? You that the only time you eat small vegetable is when you eat efo riro. But when last did you do a full body check up? Having Covid 19 may just bring out the underlying health condition you never knew you had. But, is it this same you that does not like working out because you only live once? Eating and not working out is as useless as not eating bruv.
So you feel safe. You’ve stopped going to work. But you still go out for very flimsy reasons don’t you? You go to your friend’s house. You prefer to buy your tomatoes fresh. You want to make catfish pepper-soup. And push it down with agege bread. I laugh in ventilator.
See fam, at the end of the day, natural selection will still happen. Did you know that there is a theory that shorter homosapiens died off during the stone ages because only the taller ones could reach trees to pluck fruits to eat? You need fitness, of mind and body. Smartness. Cautiousness. It’s like a military camp, except you’re your own RSM. It’s like the movies; Are you going to be the one who dies first, or last, or never?
